Canton is the county seat of Stark County and the farthest community on our list — about 49 road miles from our base in Brunswick. We take commercial, institutional and multi-family work here the same way we do closer to home: a walkthrough at your building, then a written scope and price.
Canton’s commercial buildings
- Downtown Canton — the area covered by its Special Improvement District — has its own Architectural Review Board, which reviews alterations to property there.
- The Upper Downtown Canton Historic District, along Market Avenue on the north side of downtown, has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2006.
- Aultman Hospital and Malone University are both in Canton, as is the Hall of Fame Village, a multi-phase mixed-use development next to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Planning exterior work in Canton
For designated landmarks, contributing historic properties and buildings in the downtown district, the city requires a Certificate of Appropriateness for material changes to a building’s exterior. Routine maintenance is exempt only when it involves no major change in color, so if a repaint on one of these buildings changes its colors, check with the city’s planning staff before the work is scheduled.
